What Happens During a Rotator Cuff Repair?

July 29, 2022

Rotator cuff injuries can be debilitating because they prevent you from moving your arm. Sometimes, conservative treatments like physical therapy and rest can help. Other times, surgery may be more beneficial in repairing the damage. If your doctor recommends rotator cuff repair, it is probably because the damage is severe or conservative treatments have failed to bring you relief.

So, what happens during rotator cuff repair surgery? Let’s find out.

Rotator Cuff Repair

Surgeons perform rotator cuff repair surgery to fix tears in the tendons or muscles around the shoulder. The rotator cuff consists of four tendons and muscles that connect the blade of your shoulder to your upper arm bone. This group of tissues helps lift your arm.

A tear in the rotator cuff can occur due to injury or overuse. Providers classify the damage according to its size and location.

What Happens During Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery?

Before the actual procedure, you will receive general anesthesia to put you to sleep. Once you are asleep, the surgeon will make an incision in your shoulder. The type of incision will depend on the size and location of the tear.

After they make the incision, your surgeon will use special instruments to repair the tendon or muscle. Sometimes, your surgeon may need a graft to repair the damage. They may harvest this tissue from another area of your body or use a synthetic graft. Once the repair is complete, your surgeon will close the incision with stitches or staples.

The operation usually lasts between one and two hours.

After Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery

You will likely stay in the hospital for one to two days after rotator cuff repair surgery. You will receive pain medication to help manage any discomfort during this time.

You will also receive post-operative instructions that will include how to move your arm and shoulder properly to prevent further damage. Your doctor may also recommend physical therapy to help you regain strength and range of motion.

Most people make a full recovery within four to six months. However, it may take up to a year to recover fully. Complications from rotator cuff repair surgery are rare, but can include infection, bleeding and nerve damage.
