Valeriy (Val) Shubinets, M.D. was born in Ukraine. At the age of 13, he immigrated to the U.S. with his parents. They settled in Chicago, where they became naturalized U.S. citizens. Val completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago, being one of only five Chicago Public High School students to be awarded a full-tuition scholarship to this prestigious university.
Dr. Shubinets earned his M.D. degree at Harvard Medical School. At Harvard, he was selected to the Health, Science and Technology (HST) program, geared towards developing physician-scientists. As part of HST, Dr. Shubinets attended additional classes at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and spent an extra year in a research laboratory. Dr. Shubinets then completed a 6-year residency program in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania -- known for its strong foundation in microsurgery -- and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, which is consistently ranked at the top of nation's pediatric hospitals. Finally, Dr. Shubinets completed his orthopaedic hand fellowship at Curtis National Hand Center, the nation's premier hand surgery program.
With his extensive training in microsurgery and orthopaedic hand surgery as well as board certification, Dr. Shubinets treats a variety of conditions in the upper extremity. He is excited to be a part of Greater Chesapeake Hand to Shoulder and provide excellent and compassionate care to his patients.
