James P. Higgins, M.D.

Dr. James P. Higgins, M.D. is a board-certified Plastic Surgeon with a certificate of added qualifications in Hand Surgery. He earned his Medical Degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completed his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Rochester. Additionally, he completed a Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Raymond T. Curtis National Hand Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.

Dr. Higgins currently serves as the fourth Chief of the Curtis National Hand Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. He has received several professional awards and honors, authored book chapters, and published research studies in prestigious medical journals.

Dr. Higgins' achievements and awards include:

  • Recipient of the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery Godina Traveling Fellow
  • Recipient of the American Society of Hand Traveling Visiting Professorship
  • Recipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Award from the Hand Surgery Fellows at Curtis National Hand Center
  • Recipient of the Microsurgical Case of the Year Award: American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery
  • Named a Top Doctor by Baltimore Magazine on numerous occasions
  • Founding Member of and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Association of Plastic Surgeons
  • The the recipient of the 2010 Marco Godina Traveling Fellow by the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM)
  • Served as the 2010 Dr Higgins traveling Visiting Professor for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH)
  • The the recipient of the 2013-2014 Sterling Bunnell Traveling fellow for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). 
  • The the recipient of the 2024 Weiland Award by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand
  • Served as the 2024 Zamboni Traveling Professor for the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM)
  • Serves as the site director of the joint Walter Reed/Curtis Hand military fellowship

Dr Higgins is an active member of multiple professional societies, serving on executive council and administrative committees for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM). He has served as the head program chairman/organizer of the national meetings of the ASRM (2013) and ASSH (2019). 

Additionally, his clinical and research interests include vascularized bone/cartilage reconstruction of extremity nonunions, functioning muscle reconstruction of the upper limb, toe transfer digital reconstruction, complex reconstruction of upper extremity trauma and vaso-occlusive disease of the hand. 

Dr Higgins spends his free time watching his kids’ sporting events, biking and playing music. His family enjoys hiking and climbing at parks around the country and world.
